WorkSafe New Zealand inspectors have finished a revamped training programme on machine safety following feedback from manufacturers about assessment quality.
Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke van Velden said the updated programme addresses concerns raised during 2024 roadshows and 2025 consultation. Manufacturing businesses had flagged issues including unclear improvement notices, impractical advice, and gaps in sector-specific expertise around machine guarding.
Trainee inspectors attended a one-day workshop at Burnham Military Camp focused on machine safety, with future sessions potentially using other sites. van Velden said businesses can now "expect more consistent, high‑quality assessments regardless of the inspector or region".
