Shane van Gisbergen has won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma in California, holding off Chase Briscoe in the closing stages of the 110-lap race.
Van Gisbergen started sixth and climbed to second in the opening laps before taking the lead around one-third of the way through the race. The Trackhouse Racing driver faced tyre difficulties and pressure from Briscoe late in the race.
"Chase was really good and a couple more laps we would have had some problems," van Gisbergen said.
The victory is van Gisbergen's eighth from 68 NASCAR starts and his seventh win from the last nine road course races. It comes a week after he failed to finish in San Diego.
"I was certainly pissed at the beginning of the week but this well and truly makes up for it, pretty special to win," he said.
The result moves van Gisbergen up three places to 14th in the championship standings, placing him inside the top 16 who qualify for the end-of-season play-offs. Eight races remain before the play-offs begin, all on oval circuits.
"I really need to step it up on the ovals but it certainly helps us. This is an ovals championship and I certainly need to get better at them," van Gisbergen said.
