Morocco defeated Canada 3-0 in the World Cup round of 16, reaching the quarter-finals for the second tournament running.

Azzedine Ounahi netted twice in the second half, with substitute Soufiane Rahimi adding a third as Morocco turned around a difficult first 4five minutes.

Morocco failed to register a shot on goal until the 28th minute and struggled while Canada created multiple opportunities without converting. The match saw six yellow cards issued before half-time.

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi said his side responded well after the break. "It's a World Cup match and these are difficult games with teams playing for their lives. We reacted very well in the second half in the second balls and the duels," he said.

Ounahi opened the scoring 5 minutes after the restart, finishing from 25 yards after Achraf Hakimi's low pass from the right side during a free-kick routine. He struck again in the 82nd minute on a counter-attack, with Brahim Diaz setting him up during a four-on-two break.

Ounahi's double made him the first player from Africa to net two goals in a World Cup knockout fixture since Senegal's Henri Camara in 2002.

Morocco faced a setback when Ismael Saibari suffered a hamstring injury in the 22nd minute, forcing his replacement by Rahimi. Saibari had scored three goals in the tournament before his withdrawal.

Canada played without Alphonso Davies, who faced fitness problems throughout the competition. Canada coach Marsch said: "We have to be in these situations more and more, and then we have to find ways to succeed, and then we have to build from that. I'm really proud of our guys."

Morocco will face the winner of Paraguay versus France on 9 July. The North African side reached the semi-finals in 2022.
