Matt Henry has reached number one in the ICC world Test bowling rankings, ending a 36-year gap since New Zealand last had the top-ranked bowler in the format.

The 34-year-old Canterbury seamer moved up six places following his performance at The Oval in the second Test against England, where he recorded 11 wickets for 109 runs in the match. The return represented his best figures and helped secure New Zealand's 253-run win.

Rare company for New Zealand

Henry is tied with India's Jasprit Bumrah at the top of the rankings, and becomes only the third New Zealander to reach number one in the bowling rankings. He joins Jack Cowie, who topped the rankings in 1947, and Sir Richard Hadlee, who held the number one position from 1984 to 1990.

Hadlee was the last New Zealander to hold the position, making Henry the first bowler from the country to reach the top of the Test rankings in more than three decades.
