Tom Latham and Devon Conway compiled a 317-run opening partnership on the first day of the third Test at Trent Bridge.
Latham scored 151, his 17th Test century, while Conway made 157, his eighth. The Black Caps reached stumps at 361-4 after winning the toss with the series locked at 1-1.
Highest partnership on English soil
The 317-run stand was New Zealand's highest opening partnership in a Test match in England. It marked the seventh time New Zealand's opening batters have posted a stand of 200 runs or more in Test cricket.
The duo had previously combined for 323 runs in an opening stand against West Indies at Mount Maunganui in December. The captain's century came after he had managed only 34 runs in four previous innings this series.
England's costly errors
England failed to review an lbw appeal against Conway on 71 when Shoaib Bashir struck his pad before bat with the score at 157-0. Television replays confirmed the decision would have been overturned.
Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith dropped a simple catching chance when Latham was on 129.
The pitch was flat and docile, with temperatures reaching up to 31C. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson both returned to the side after being dropped, Stokes for disciplinary issues and Atkinson after missing the second Test.
Late flurry from England
The hosts took a flurry of late wickets once the opening partnership was broken. Smith caught Latham off Ben Stokes, ending the captain's innings at 151.
Part-time spinner Joe Root dismissed Conway with the score on 319, the batsman caught in the deep. Rachin Ravindra followed shortly after, dismissed for 7 when he sliced Atkinson high into the air and was caught behind.
Jofra Archer dismissed Henry Nicholls for 36 with the final ball of the day, Smith taking the catch.
