WorkSafe is making enquiries after a boy who attended a school for children with special needs died on Monday following an incident with a school van.

The boy was under the age of 10. The school's principal described him as "dearly loved", and a statement on behalf of the principal said "it's really sad and a hard time for the school community and the boy's family. He was a very loved young man."

WorkSafe inquiry

Worksafe northern regional manager Brad Duggan said work-related transport must be planned and managed so that risks are identified and controlled.

"This includes ensuring systems are in place to keep people safe when getting on and off vehicles, and that vulnerable people are properly accounted for," Duggan said.

Duggan said WorkSafe expects those responsible to take all reasonable steps to prevent harm where work activities are involved.

"Failures in safety systems could have devastating consequences," he said.

School response

The school's board and leadership have support in place for staff and students.
