The Government is inviting public submissions on proposed changes to catch limits and sustainability measures affecting 22 fish stocks.

Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones announced the consultation, which proposes reductions to tarakihi catches following stock assessments showing both East and West Coast fishery levels will continue to fall. Around 95% of commercially caught tarakihi is sold domestically.

The review also proposes increased catch limits for snapper and trevally in area 2, covering East Cape, Hawke's Bay and Wellington. Submissions close at 5pm on 24 July 2026, with ministerial decisions due before the fishing year begins on 1 October 2026.
