Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has expressed confidence in Police Commissioner Richard Chambers as the Independent Police Conduct Authority examines complaints about his conduct.
The IPCA is reviewing allegations concerning Chambers' behaviour towards women, according to information obtained by RNZ. Chambers has strongly rejected the allegations.
Dual investigation process
Police Minister Mark Mitchell received two separate complaints about Chambers, the first arriving in November 2025 and the second in February 2026.
Mitchell sent the complaints to the IPCA and Police National Integrity Unit for examination. Police and the IPCA are not discussing specifics of what the complaints allege.
Political support maintained
Luxon made his first public remarks on the matter since news of the investigation emerged last week. He said he was aware of the complaints but considered it inappropriate for ministers to become involved.
The Prime Minister backed Mitchell's public support for the commissioner.
"But there's a process going on at the moment where an investigation is underway, and it's entirely appropriate we let that run its course," Luxon said.
Commissioner remains in post
Chambers is continuing to perform his duties as Police Commissioner while the investigation proceeds.
Luxon said he did not think the investigation would damage public confidence in the police force.
