The Opportunity Party has recorded 4.6% support in the latest 1News Verian poll, edging closer to the 5% threshold required for parliamentary representation under MMP.
The result marks a milestone for the party, which would need either 5% of the party vote or an electorate seat to enter Parliament. Since MMP began in 1996, no entirely new party has successfully crossed the threshold.
Qiulae Wong became leader near the end of 2025, when the party also rebranded from 'Opportunities' to 'Opportunity'. The party's central policy is a $20,000 universal basic income, up from the $10,000 originally proposed by founder Gareth Morgan, funded through higher land taxes and lower income taxes. Wong said the changes would be implemented over 10 years.
Wong positions the party as a potential kingmaker alternative to New Zealand First. "I believe they stand for division and they use division to get votes, whereas we want to actually find common ground and bring people together," she said.
The party would first approach whichever major party wins the most votes in coalition negotiations, with policy priorities including a long-term energy strategy and addressing ocean issues. Wong said the party would set out bottom lines closer to the election, adding "we wouldn't just take a seat at the table for the sake of it".
