NZTA has awarded the detailed design contract for the SH2 Waikare Gorge realignment to HEB Construction.
The realignment will shift the highway away from the gorge with a new single-span truss bridge. The bridge will be 260 metres long and cross 60 metres above the river. The project is expected to cost between $350 and $425 million and take up to four years to complete.
HEB is carrying out geotechnical investigations to inform the final design. Early works are expected to get underway later in 2026, with main construction to follow once design, consenting and property acquisition are completed.
