New Zealand is prioritising discussions with the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy regarding the potential replacement of its Anzac frigates.
Defence Minister Chris Penk confirmed the focus while attending the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Britain's Type 31 frigate is understood to be under consideration, while Japanese media has reported that Japan is preparing to launch talks on exporting its Mogami-class frigate.
Penk said "selection of combat capabilities within the future fleet will be determined through the usual business case process". No final decisions have been made.
Advice on next steps is expected to go to Cabinet before the end of 2027. The 2025 Defence Capability Plan identifies replacement of New Zealand's Anzac frigates as an indicative investment in the 2029-2039 period.
