Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey has written to NZTA and Waimakariri District Council advocating for the permanent shutdown of two Lineside Road intersections following three accidents in one week.
Doocey's proposal targets the junctions at Mulcocks Road and Fernside Road, citing concerns that too many crashes occur when vehicles turn right into oncoming traffic. "We can't wait until another death before we make this call," he said.
NZTA plans to apply for funding through the 2027-30 National Land Transport Programme for safety upgrades including right turn bays at both locations. Mayor Dan Gordon said he is particularly interested in whether restricting movements to left turns only would be a feasible safety solution.
