An investigation into Human Rights Commission Chief Commissioner Stephen Rainbow is underway, led by Kristy McDonald KC.
Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said he became aware of the complaints about two weeks ago. The complaints have been received over recent weeks and months.
Goldsmith declined to detail the nature of the complaints. The investigation will determine whether they meet the threshold for further action.
"I became aware of it a couple of weeks ago and the Human Rights Commission is a highly independent role, and there's clear procedures in place," Goldsmith said. "I've taken advice, and we're having an investigation."
Goldsmith said he does not currently have power to suspend Rainbow. He said he stands by the appointment and has confidence in the process.
Rainbow was appointed in 2024. In December, the High Court ruled Goldsmith had appointed Rainbow unlawfully. Rainbow had not been on the original shortlist, and Goldsmith directed that he replace other candidates. The selection panel did not recommend Rainbow's appointment, noting he lacked legal experience, but Goldsmith proceeded with the appointment.
The appointment drew criticism over Rainbow's public statements on Israel and transgender issues.
