The Government will provide up to $8.6 million to establish Ngāmotu Marae in Moturoa, central New Plymouth, near the waterfront and coastal walkway.

The marae will be established by Ngāti Te Whiti, the mana whenua of New Plymouth, who have not had a marae in the city for more than 150 years. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka disclosed the funding from the Regional Infrastructure Fund.

The $17.8 million project includes a wharenui and wharekai, community and meeting spaces, administration areas, and civil works including power, water, access, earthworks, landscaping and parking. Construction will support around 46 jobs.

Ngāti Te Whiti Whenua Tōpu Trust is leading the development alongside contributions from Ngāti Te Whiti hapū, local government, the Toi Foundation, and the community. The wharekai will serve as an emergency response centre, capable of providing food, shelter and essential services during emergencies.

Jones said "for more than 150 years, Ngāti Te Whiti, the mana whenua of New Plymouth, have not had a marae in the city. This investment restores a critical anchor that is accessible and firmly part of the city's future".

Potaka said "this is not just for Ngāti Te Whiti, it is for New Plymouth. Marae are where people gather, decisions are made, and culture and community life are lived every day".
