The Government is assessing damage from recent heavy rain in the Wairarapa to determine whether support is needed for affected farmers and growers.
The rainfall has caused erosion on hillside farms and damaged local roads and bridges. Agriculture Minister Todd McClay said MPI staff are working with the local Rural Support Trust to assess the scale of the damage and determine if a formal adverse event classification is warranted.
McClay is consulting with local MP Mike Butterick, who is also Associate Agriculture Minister and a Wairarapa farmer, to ensure the region is ready for more wet weather. MetService has forecast additional heavy rain across the Wairarapa over the coming week.
