A heatwave across Europe has brought deaths in Spain, Italy and France, forced France to shut down nuclear reactors and prompted water restrictions in the UK as temperatures reach record levels.

Deaths and nuclear shutdowns

Heatwave-related deaths occurred in Spain, Italy and France during the extreme temperatures.

France shut down nuclear reactors due to the heatwave.

UK breaks June temperature record

The United Kingdom hit a new June temperature record as thermometers reached 31°C, with forecasters predicting temperatures would reach 33°C the following day.

Water restrictions in Kent

South East Water implemented a temporary hosepipe ban in Kent due to water supply strain from the heatwave.

The water utility company told customers the restrictions would take effect immediately. "To safeguard that shared supply and prevent any homes from facing a sudden loss of water, we sadly need to ask our communities to not use their hosepipes immediately," South East Water said. "We are deeply sorry for the disruption this causes, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone helping us protect Kent's water."
