A bill to overhaul New Zealand's environmental reporting framework has passed its first reading in Parliament.
The Environmental Reporting Amendment Bill would modify the Environmental Reporting Act 2015 to strengthen data quality and ensure information is more accessible and timely. The proposed changes would shift reporting frequencies to intervals better suited to measuring environmental shifts over time.
Environment Minister Nicola Grigg said the bill aimed to create a reporting system "that gives clearer insights, and shows how the environment may change over time, and how decisions of the day may impact the environment and our communities in the future".
The amendments would clarify agency roles in environmental monitoring and create more systematic frameworks for gathering environmental data. The changes are intended to improve transparency and enable better-informed decisions on resource management, spatial planning and climate adaptation.
The bill was introduced on 16 June and will now go to the Environment Select Committee for consideration.
