The Government will expand an early language development programme to 525 early childhood centres, up from the current 65.

Education Minister Erica Stanford announced the expansion of the Enrich scheme, which received $12.4 million in last year's Budget.

A year-long trial found children enrolled in Enrich demonstrated stronger oral language abilities and improved capacity to regulate their own behaviour compared to peers not in the programme.

The scheme equips early childhood educators with methods to develop children's communication skills during routine activities such as play and group time.

Some five-year-olds are starting school with language development comparable to children three years younger. Studies have found that excessive screen exposure in home environments correlates with reduced quality of adult-child interaction, delays in speech acquisition, and difficulties with behaviour regulation in preschool-aged children.
