A private water main ruptured in central Wellington early Wednesday, flooding buildings on Willeston Street and forcing one building to be evacuated.

Fire and Emergency received the call at 4.35am, with water spreading from the initial building into neighbouring basements. Three fire trucks remained at the scene pumping water, while Victoria Street was closed between Willeston and Hunter Streets.

Fire and Emergency senior station officer Steve Mackle said the ruptured pipe served one of the flooded buildings. Power was cut to affected buildings, though no injuries were reported.
