The Audit Office is conducting an inquiry into value-for-money in the learning support system for children with disabilities, which receives nearly $1.5 billion in annual funding.
The inquiry will examine how the Ministry of Education can enhance its management of learning support and demonstrate better value. The office expects to complete its inquiry in September 2026.
Work on the inquiry had already started when the Audit Office released its work plan for the coming financial year on 1 July 2026.
The office is also considering investigations into whether the education system adequately prepares students for primary school entry and the effectiveness of student engagement programmes. No measure of school-readiness currently exists for children entering primary education.
