The New Zealand Air Force has fired Harpoon missiles from a P-8 Poseidon aircraft for the first time during a major military exercise.
The anti-ship missiles struck a target ship during the drill.
Squadron Leader Michael Craies, who commanded the aircraft, described the crew's reaction when the missile was released. The crew celebrated the teamwork involved after feeling the weapon fall from the airframe.
